Red Spinach

Red spinach is a leafy vegetable belonging to the Amaranthus family; specifically amaranthus dubius. Unlike common spinach and beetroot, red spinach is naturally richer in dietary nitrate, a compound the body can convert into nitric oxide. Because of its high nitrate content, red spinach has become the focus of research into athletic performance, circulation, and healthy aging.

No. Red spinach is not the same plant as conventional green spinach (Spinacia oleracea). The red spinach used in our products is Amaranthus dubius, a leafy plant naturally rich in dietary nitrate.

Native to Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and tropical South America, red spinach has also been cultivated for centuries across subtropical regions of South and Southeast Asia and parts of Africa. Its leaves have long been eaten as a nutritious vegetable, while amaranth seeds have been valued as an ancient superfood.

Like several leafy green vegetables, red spinach absorbs nitrate from the soil as part of its normal growth. Environmental conditions, farming practices, geographic growing region, harvest timing, and extraction method all influence nitrate levels.

Although both are leafy crops, they belong to different plant families. Red spinach is generally recognized for having higher natural nitrate levels than common spinach (Spinacia oleracea), making it an important ingredient to support nitric oxide.

Oxalates occur naturally in many plants, including beets and green spinach. Our extraction process reduces naturally occurring oxalates to non-detectable levels. That means independent laboratory testing confirms that the finished red spinach extract contains no detectable oxalate.

Some people describe red spinach as a superfood because it contains high levels of naturally occurring nitrate. A 'superfood' is a marketing term, not a scientific classification.

Our red spinach is harvested, cleaned, and pulverized with water to create a mash. The water is then removed, leaving a concentrated red spinach mass. The concentrate is filtered and dried into a powder, then milled, blended, and sifted to create a consistent finished extract. The finished extract is tested for microbial, heavy metals, and nitrate levels to ensure safety and efficacy.

Most dietary nitrate research and commercial products have historically focused on beetroot. Since our research and clinical studies on red spinach have been published, it has become for many the preferred choice for nitric oxide food.

Red spinach has been consumed as a food in many parts of the world for generations. As with any new food or dietary supplement, individuals with medical conditions, those taking medications, or anyone with questions about its suitability should consult their healthcare provider before use.

Dietary Nitrate

Dietary nitrate is a naturally occurring compound found in vegetables and other plant foods. Red spinach, leafy greens, arugula, lettuce, beetroot, and celery are common dietary sources. In the body, dietary nitrate can be converted into nitric oxide.

Nitric oxide is a molecule, a gas actually, produced naturally by the body. It helps blood vessels relax and supports healthy circulation, oxygen delivery, and normal cardiovascular function.

After food containing dietary nitrate is consumed, it mixes with saliva on the back of the tounge, where beneficial bacteria in the mouth begin converting it into nitrite. After it is swallowed, the body can convert the nitrite into nitric oxide.

Nitric oxide helps support relaxed blood vessels for healthy blood flow throughout the body. It plays a vital role in oxygen and nutrient delivery, exercise performance, cardiovascular health, and healthy aging.

Leafy vegetables are generally among the richest natural sources of dietary nitrate by weight. Red spinach leaves are especially concentrated in nitrate and can provide multiple times more nitrate than other vegetables.

No. Nitrate levels can vary considerably between different vegetables and even between separate harvests of the same plant. This is why our red spinach extract is standardized and tested to provide a measured amount of naturally occurring nitrate.

Daily nitrate intake varies widely depending on a person’s diet. People who regularly eat nitrate-rich vegetables generally consume more dietary nitrate than those who eat few vegetables. We disclose the measured nitrate amount per serving so you know exactly how much you are adding to your diet.

The body’s ability to produce nitric oxide naturally can become less efficient with age. Diet, physical activity, oral bacteria, cardiovascular health, and other lifestyle factors can also influence nitric oxide production.

Yes. Eating nitrate-rich vegetables can support the body’s natural nitric oxide pathway. Red spinach provides a particularly concentrated source of naturally occurring dietary nitrate.

Nitrate levels begin increasing after nitrate-rich food or supplements are consumed and can remain elevated for several hours.

Strong antiseptic mouthwash can reduce the beneficial oral bacteria involved in converting dietary nitrate into nitrite. Because this first conversion occurs in the mouth, frequent use of antibacterial mouthwash around the time a nitrate product is consumed may interfere with the body’s nitrate-to-nitric-oxide pathway.

Dietary nitrate from vegetables should not be viewed in the same way as processed meats. Vegetables naturally provide nitrate along with vitamin C, antioxidants, and other plant compounds. Processed meats can contain added nitrate or nitrite and are consumed in a very different food composition.

No. Dietary nitrate follows the body’s natural nitrate-to-nitrite-to-nitric-oxide pathway. Many products marketed as nitric oxide boosters that use amino acids support a different nitric oxide pathway and with varying results.

The amount of nitrate in a plant powder or extract can vary significantly. A product can list its amount of powder without measuring or disclosing the nitrate it actually contains. A measured nitrate amount informs you the nitrate potency of each serving for consistent use.

Red Spinach vs Beetroot

No. Red spinach and beetroot come from different plants. Both naturally contain dietary nitrate, but red spinach extract may provide a more concentrated source of nitrate in a smaller serving.

Red spinach extract can deliver a high measurable amount of naturally occurring nitrate without requiring a larger serving than red spinach. It also has a mild taste and may be mixed with potentially less flavor impact into juice, smoothies, or food.

Red spinach may contain significantly more nitrate than conventional beetroot. However, nitrate levels vary by plant variety, growing conditions, processing and other factors. Our extract is standardized and tested so the nitrate amount in each serving is always known.

Compared with red spinach, conventional beet powder typically requires a substantially larger quantity to provide 400 milligrams of naturally occurring nitrate.

Many beet products list only the amount of beet powder in each serving. That alone does not reveal how much nitrate the product actually provides.

No. A larger serving may show how much powder is present, without showing the amount of nitrate it contains. Check to see if there is a measured amount of naturally occurring nitrate per serving.

Red spinach extract does not have a strong earthy flavor. Because only a small amount is needed, it mixes easily into juice, smoothies, and recipes without significantly affecting the taste.

Red spinach extract generally does not create the same intense red staining associated with beet juice and beet powders. Normal care should still be taken when handling any concentrated plant.

Red spinach extract requires only a small serving compared to other powders or juices.

Beets contain more natural sugar compared to red spinach.

Oxalates occur naturally in many plants, including beets and green spinach. Our extraction process reduces naturally occurring oxalates to non-detectable levels. Independent laboratory testing confirms that the finished red spinach extract contains no detectable oxalate.

We believe disclosing a measured, consistent, and clinically verified amount of naturally occurring dietary nitrate is most important for boosting nitric oxide through the oral nitrate-nitrite pathway.

Athletic Performance

Athletes use dietary nitrate to support the body’s natural production of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide helps maintain normal blood-vessel relaxation, healthy blood flow, and oxygen delivery throughout the body.

Dietary nitrate supports the body’s natural nitric oxide production, which may help support oxygen use, muscular performance, and exercise tolerance. Individual results may vary based on the athlete, activity, serving amount, and timing of use.

No. Dietary nitrate has been studied in endurance, sprint, team-sport, and resistance exercise. It may be useful for athletes performing sustained exercise as well as repeated high-intensity efforts.

Research suggests that dietary nitrate may support certain aspects of resistance exercise, including muscular power, movement velocity, and exercise tolerance. It should not be considered a replacement for proper training, nutrition, sleep, and recovery.

Dietary nitrate has been studied for activities involving repeated high-intensity efforts, such as soccer, cycling, and other team or sprint-based sports. Individual results vary, and benefits may depend on the exercise protocol and the athlete’s training level.

400 mg dietary nitrate is an amount that has been clinically studied for its potential to support athletic performance. RS400® provides 400 milligrams of naturally occurring dietary nitrate per serving, so athletes know exactly how much they are consuming.

RS400® Sport is generally taken about one hour before training or competition. This allows time for dietary nitrate to move through the body’s natural nitrate-to-nitrite-to-nitric-oxide pathway.

It can be taken with or without food. Some athletes prefer mixing it into juice, a smoothie, or another pre-workout food or beverage. Because only a small amount is needed, it should not significantly affect the taste.

RS400® Sport can be used before selected workouts or competitions. Some athletes may prefer consistent daily nitrate intake, while others use it only before important training sessions or events. Athletes should follow the labeled serving directions and consider their individual training program.

Use RS400® Sport only as directed on the label. More is not necessarily better. Athletes considering a different amount should first consult a qualified sports dietitian or healthcare professional.

No. Responses to dietary nitrate vary. Training status, diet, oral bacteria, exercise type, fitness level, timing, and individual physiology can all influence the response.

It may. Some research suggests that highly trained athletes can respond differently from recreationally active people. This does not mean trained athletes cannot benefit, but the size and consistency of the response may vary.

Strong antibacterial mouthwash can reduce the oral bacteria needed for the first step in converting nitrate into nitrite. Athletes may wish to avoid antibacterial mouthwash near the time they take a dietary nitrate product.

No. RS400® Sport supports nitric oxide production through naturally occurring dietary nitrate. It does not rely on caffeine or other stimulants.

It may be used alongside many other sports-nutrition products, but ingredients can overlap and individual medical circumstances differ. Athletes should review all product labels and consult a qualified healthcare professional or sports dietitian when combining supplements.

Yes. Red spinach formulations have been studied at two universities. One study in resistance-trained men found increased blood nitrate and nitrite, increased mean barbell velocity, and reduced perceived exertion. Common Myths

Red spinach is not conventional green spinach. The red spinach used in our products is Amaranthus dubius, a different leafy plant naturally rich in dietary nitrate.

Nitrate content can vary greatly depending on the plant variety, growing conditions, harvest, and processing method. The only way to know the amount provided is through standardization and testing.

The size of the serving tells you how much powder is present, not how much nitrate it contains. A smaller serving of a concentrated, standardized extract may provide more nitrate than a much larger serving of ordinary plant powder.

A product may contain another nitrate-rich vegetable without providing a meaningful or consistent nitrate amount. Without testing and disclosure, consumers may not know how much nitrate each serving contains.

They do not. Dietary nitrate supports nitric oxide production through the body’s natural nitrate-to-nitrite-to-nitric-oxide pathway. Stimulant-based pre-workouts generally rely on ingredients such as caffeine to stimulate the nervous system.

Dietary nitrate does not create the immediate sensation associated with caffeine. The body gradually converts nitrate into nitrite and nitric oxide over several hours.

More is not necessarily better. Use the serving amount stated on the product label. Exceeding the recommended serving may increase the likelihood of unwanted effects without providing additional benefits.

Red spinach extract does not have a strong, earthy flavor.

RS400® Sport and VitaSpinach® contain no caffeine or stimulant ingredients. They support nitric oxide production through naturally occurring dietary nitrate.

Contact customer service as soon as possible. We will try to accommodate the request, but an order cannot be changed or canceled after it has entered fulfillment or shipped.
